This game is like 100 years old but I still play it from time to time, even today. The graphics are good, the soundtrack is incredible and the controls are precise. You'll need a good analog controller (or a wheel) to drive the fastest cars as they are almost undrivable with digital control (you'll spin out of control as somebody else mentioned)

Tony Hawk's Project 8 Review

Tony Hawk's Project 8
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The way I see the Tony Hawk series is like this: from THPS to THUG 2, Neversoft was running a marathon, and they were doing really well, too. Then, in 2005, Neversoft tripped by making American Wasteland, which wasn't necessarily a bad game, it just wasn't nearly as good as the others. Now, the eighth installment in the series has come, and I have to admit I'm a little disappointed. At E3, they said that Tony Hawk's Project 8 would be returning to the roots of the Tony Hawk series, and I interpreted that to mean that it would be like a Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5. I bought the game and played it. The graphics weren't as good as I expected, but they didn't suck. Overall, Neversoft could have done a bit more polish on this game, and it's definitely not worth $600, but it's a solid entry in the series, and anybody who has been a TH fan since the beginning should give it a whirl.

Grand Theft Auto III Review

Grand Theft Auto III
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm 42 years old and really hesitated about buying a game that looked like it was designed by punks for punks. After several fascinating hours of wholly immersive gameplay however, I am so glad I put my preconceptions aside and bought this game. Or should I say 'city simulator'? GTA 3 breaks away from the first two in the series by going with a true 3-D first and third-person design. There's many camera angles that you can choose from on the fly. Drive cars, boats, and even planes, or just walk around enjoying the fantastic sights and sounds. This ambitious and extremely well-executed simulator was originally designed for a console, but the PC version is much better, with ultra-high resolution graphics, no loading once you're in the game, and removal of barriers that were in the console version. I'm still on the first of three islands. I haven't yet discovered how to get to the other two, but discovery is part of the fun here, and my anticipation is half the fun. You can accept missions from a variety of sources, or you can simply run (and drive) freely, experiencing the little dramas unfolding around you throughout the city and even taking part in these little dramas if you choose. The possibilies are endless and it's this free-form design that is what pushes this game way beyond any other. It combines the very best elements of games like 'Carmageddon', 'Thief', and yes, even 'The Sims' of all things. Beware however, there are adult themes here without doubt. Controls are super-easy and easy to customise to your liking. The game is easy to play, and easier to lose yourself in. There's practically no learning curve. By far, easily the best game I've bought in the last year, and I buy many. Every time you steal a car, you'll find there's different radio stations to choose from, with all different kinds of music, advertisements, and talk shows going on. You can switch between them or shut them off entirely. This adds a huge amount of atmosphere to the game, and you can even customize the game by importing your own MP3s to the game files! A note to the developers: In the add-on pack, please include a couple more CDs of this great radio stuff!

However, it has to be said that a 32 meg video card is the very absolute minimum you should have to run this. I've tried it on several of my systems, and on my PII 450 with a 16 meg TNT 1 card and 256 megs system ram, it ran, but very slowly; hardly playable on that system. On my self-built 1.2 ghz. Athlon with a 32 meg GeForce 2 card and 256 megs ram, the game ran fairly well at 640 X 480 and it was indeed playable with options turned down, but it became clear to me that a video card upgrade was needed. So yes, I did purchase a GeForce 4 Ti 4200 with 128 megs video ram just to play this game. And I don't regret it. I can now run the game (and all my other new games) at 1280 X 1024 with all options maxed, and it's super smooth.
Simply put, this game is very graphically intense and there's a living city with lots of pedestrians and cars and buildings and scenery to render, all of it accessible to you with no loading times, so a great video card is crucial! Your computer's CPU is also important, but not as important as your video card. I'm thinking a PIII 600 with a 32 meg video card is minumum, and that same processor with a 64 meg video card will make a dramatic difference in your enjoyment level. I've played this game roughly 10 hours thus far, and haven't yet encountered a single bug, crash, or lock-up. This game is destined to be a classic and I'm looking forward to whatever add-on packs or sequels come along.

PELICAN ACCESSORIES PL2014 Evo Sport GT Wireless Wheel for Xbox Review

PELICAN ACCESSORIES PL2014 Evo Sport GT Wireless Wheel for Xbox
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For ease of reading, I'll be concise. I personally like this wheel quite a bit, but it did take some getting used to. The most obvious first thing is the feedback of the wheel. Rather than use an auto-centering device, this wheel has resistance, much like a small car with no power steering. It can seem stiff at first, but seems to loosen up a bit after some use. It's a little different approach than many others take, but actually works well once you get the hang of it. The wireless is stable, but I did get interference at one point (which I actually found hilarious...just the one time was not enough for it to become a nuisance). Ergonomically, the wheel itself feels good, with very aggressive suction mounting for tabletop use and a decent enough set of dimensions for laptop use. Only gripe here is that the torque to operate the wheel is enough to knock it off my lap when using one hand on the wheel and one on the shifter. Tabletop is much nicer. Speaking of the shifter, a seperate unit or moving it back and to the right a bit would help realism immensly. It's a touch awkward, and for that matter, could use a little more resistance. Now for the pedals. As far as feel goes, they could be a touch larger and further apart. When is someone(to my knowledge, nobody has addressed this) going to have an appropriate resistance built into the brake pedals? This has plagued every racing wheel I have encountered. Also, it took me awhile to figure out that the pedals should not be touched when turning on the wheel AND the xbox. It got to the point that I had to email pelican support to see if there was a problem with the throttle pedal potentiometer or the mechanical portion of the control (everything checked out after some thorough testing of pedal travel, voltage sweep, etc. Yes I went through this much trouble). After getting the startup procedure down and getting comfortable with the controller itself, I was able to match at very least and for the most part exceed my performances in my collection of racing games of the xbox. Now that the meat and potatoes is served, here comes the dessert. This thing is pretty nifty in the sense of bells and whistles. For instance, being wireless, it runs on batteries (not included). So instead of the usual low battery light they incorporated a small 'fuel' gauge into the control. Nifty. The control itself has a fixed button map, but with the exception of the right analog stick everything is present and in useful positions. For the record, as well, the button map basically mimics most default controller settings, and usually only minor tweaks are necessary. One thing they threw into the mix that is actually very helpful is the inclusion of a left analog stick in the frame of the steering wheel. This can be used back and forth with the wheel (they both do the same job), but not at the same time, thanks to an internal software delay that detects the switch from stick to wheel and vice versa. Due to this the D-pad is located down on the base, as it is rarely needed anyway. Construction is sound, which I can say comfortably as I have already opened the unit to investigate the possibility of adding springs to the shifter and pedals (looks very possible, by the way). Overall I am very happy with this product, although the learning curve to get the most out of it might be a bit much for people with short attention spans, which basically means that younger players may not have a very good time with this one. Overall I am happy with my purchase, as I have been with other products from pelican. So much for being concise.

PSP 3000 Limited Edition Gran Turismo Entertainment Pack - Silver Review

PSP 3000 Limited Edition Gran Turismo Entertainment Pack - Silver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We've been a PS3 household ever since the 60GB version came about so, with two pre-teens in the house, we were ripe for a PSP adoption. We actually bought the Ratchet & Clank Pack some time ago because one of my kids was a fan of the game. The Hannah Montana bundle followed shortly after because our 6 yr. old was Hannah Montana's biggest fun. But we have 2 boys and junior maxed out on the GT Prologue on the PS3 and he 'lost' the 3000 we got him a few months ago at school so... here comes the PSP 3000 GT pack.THE BUNDLE
----------

The bundle costs a little more than the 'clean' PSP-3000 but, in our case, the convenience of getting it together with a great game AND a memory card AND all the other freebies justified the extra expense.

The 'Pack' includes the following:

- The PSP 3000 itself in silver
- 2GB Memory card
- Gran Turismo, of course - click on the link for the game's reviews
- A voucher for The Italian Job (not exactly a hit movie)
- More vouchers for a car and a few downloaded songs
- Manual, promos, registration card, etc.

Since this is not our first PSP-3000, it was up and running within minutes but, trying to be objective, someone new to the PSP environment should be able to have it running with basic functions pretty quickly - half an hour to a couple of hours.

Note:

Given the PSP's built-in Wi-Fi and its PS3 integration you can do quite a few things out of the box if you have Wi-Fi or a PS3 but, for a better gaming experience we ordered a 16GB memory stick and will probably be using the included 2GB to archive photos - will hold over 1000 - because we are planning to store a few movies when taking it on the road. Movies take about 0.5GB each and we just downloaded the digital copy that came with the Blu-ray 1998 Godzilla. The Italian Job... maybe we can find a buyer for it :)FIRST PSP 3000 IMPRESSIONS
--------------------------
I was surprised of how good and versatile and elegant this little console can be. It has most of the PS3 buttons, including one analog joystick, the display is large and bright, the resolution is good for the screen size (480x272), and it responds quickly to controls. It appears to be solidly built. Unlike prior models, the 3000 comes with a built-in microphone while the sound output can be either through the internal speakers or headphones (not included). After charging the battery, my kid was up and running and happy in no time. It's worth noting that the silver finish is more forgiving than the regular piano black PSPs when it comes to fingerprints. But, let me proceed with a more structured discussion. STAND-ALONE OPERATION (DISCONNECTED)
----------------------------------------
Once charged, the PSP 3000 will play games or movies delivered on UMDs or off a Memory Stick card. In addition, it will display photos and play music stored on the Memory card.NETWORKING AND INTERNET CONNECTIVITY
--------------------------------------
The built-in Wi-Fi allows the PSP 3000 to access the Playstation Netowork and Playstation Store directly. Off the box, there is an Internet browser, a Search (the Internet) function, several Internet Radio applications and the ability to use the PSP as a Skype phone for as long as one has a Skype account and the PSP happens to be within the range of a Wi-Fi hotspot.PS3 INTEGRATION
-----------------
After the PSP is paired with the PS3, the PS3 can 'push' video, photos, music and even PSP games downloaded from the Playstation Store when connected through a USB wire. When wireless, the PSP can basically take over the PS3 - actually display the PS3's own screen and display photos stored on the PS3, play music stored on the PS3. Movie play is not supported. Amazingly, you can access your PS3 remotely from anywhere in the Universe for as long as your PSP can access the Net via Wi-Fi.

When playing music, it's possible to play it on the PSP's own speakers/headphones or have the PS3 play it itself, the PSP therefore acting as a remote control device.PC INTEGRATION
----------------
Through a USB connection, the PC will see the PSP's memory card as an attached drive. This will allow for music, photo or movie files to be transferred directly to the PSP.ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT
----------------------
The PSP 3000 comes very close to being the perfect portable game-playing (and more) machine, at least in the Sony universe. Perfection would be achieved if the 'keyboard' interface were improved - it's awful now - if it had touch screen capabilities and if file transfers from the PS3 were possible wirelessly. Also on the wish list, I hope that there were more legal 'digital copy' movies available for the PSP. And Bluetooth.PSP 3000 vs. PSP GO
---------------------
The question begs itself: how about a PSP Go? Well, in our case, the Go was out of the question because the Go price is a little to high - we have 3 kids - and we would rather keep our games on disks so that they can be easily shared amongst our tribe and won't depend too much on our memory card's limitations. In addition, we buy quite a few games on impulse and end up selling them a few days later because the kids don't like them so we like the ability to sell our games and to buy games 'used'. Not to mention the ability to trade games with other kids. Of course, our concerns may not apply to everyone.
MY RATING
-----------
For anyone who happens to be a Grand Turismo fan, this is the perfect bundle. Well... the only bundle. If GT is not your game, then you are probably better off with a 'clean' PSP and then get your own memory card, games, movies, etc.

For what you get, it's a 4.5 stars plus, rounded up to 5.

________________________

Note:

It would be almost sinful not to protect your new PSP. We use PSP Logitech PlayGear Pocket - Slim. It doesn't have compartments to store UMDs or memory cards but it does wrap around your 3000 like a glove and, in my view, it provides the best protection.
