Universal Racing Wheel Review

Universal Racing Wheel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have long searched and I mean LONG searched for a good racing wheel and this is it. I have personally tried out almost every wheel and pedals on this site and this one is far superior to all. It has sensitivity tuning so you can customize it to your own needs and has easy button remapping at the press of a button. Some people who own this product refuse to spend the 5 minutes needed to read the simple instructions and correctly tune it for each game. It now even comes with instructions specifically on how to set it for Gran Turismo 3 on the PS2, undoubtedly the greatest consol racing sim ever. Many things make this a great buy:
First of all, it has digital and analog modes, so it can be used on almost any game, Playstation or Playstation 2, despite what this site says.
It can be fully callibrated for sensitivity and dead-band.
It has suction cups for hard surfaces and retractable leg supports for comfortable lap placement.
It has all of the standard playstation buttons, plus a very nice shifter and two-way butterfly buttons mounted on the back of the wheel, which are great for Formula One shifting.
On the main body there is an LCD guage that measures accelorator throttle. (very cool)
The pedals have rubber pads that keep them in place during the most abusive acceleration, though it is little needed because of the vertical vector pedal collumns that change the center of gravity to keep it in place. There is a foot rest on the side for when you are not braking and the pedals have grip textures to keep your feet from unwantedly sliding off.
Everything is very durrable and can widstand lots of abuse unless you are bent on breaking shifter with unnecissarily hard shifting habbits, though trust me, I have only heard of one breaking and everyone else seems quite happy.
Very comfortable grip.
Even though this is the best wheel I have ever used, it is still not perfect. The wheel is a little to small, and does not turn 900 degrees like a real car (few game wheels do this anyway), though it makes turning a little easier. Sometimes when you set the shifter it also remaps the up or down d-pad buttons, but they are not used during raceing and can be easily set right when needed. Some people complain that the leg-wells are to close together, but it is more snug than tight and does not hinder lower leg movement, so there is no difference in use of the pedals. As I have said, this is the best wheel and pedals I have ever used other than that of my own car and it is worth your money. If you dont happen to like it then you obviously have not used some of the junk out there and you can return it anyway. Have fun!

Rgt Force Feedback Pro Clutch Edition Wheel Review

Rgt Force Feedback Pro Clutch Edition Wheel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My son gave me the RGT for my birthday. He likes his Logitech Momo but was unable to find one for me at a decent price.

The RGT wheel and pedals are well constructed and function properly, for the most part. The driver setup went so fast I thought something was wrong, so I did it again. You need to understand that "Control Panel" means the ThrustMaster Control Panel, not Windows'.The device driver for Win7 64-bit is in beta. The Test Effects section does not work.Watch out when you power up the wheel. It WILL immediately rotate lock-to-lock with all of its considerable force.

Response of the wheel in Live for Speed and iRacing is immediate and accurate. My main beef is the notchiness that the force feedback motor provides. It distracts from the precision driving experience.By fiddling with the "Control Panel" and game Controller settings, I was able to minimize that effect.

My old wheel is a Traxxas Free Wheel Racing Controller. It looks like an RC car transmitter.Actually, it's a PC game port version of their RC car wheel with nothing in the antenna hole.It is extremely quick and accurate for steering, throttle/brake and shifting but lacks other buttons and hat features. Also, I found no game ports that support Win7 64-bit.My times with the RGT are still worse than my times with the Traxxas.

My only other complaint with the RGT is that the pedals are pretty close together for my big feet. The clutch and shifter add a nice touch of realism to the games. However, if you forget to clutch when you stop, the engine goes to idle anyway rather than stalling. That may be a function of the games rather than the controller.I have not tried the analog paddles for throttle and brake yet.

Finally, the clamp seems strong enough but the wheel wobbled slightly forward and back when tightened down on my desk top.By moving 2 of the adhesive-backed rubber feet from directly under the clamp to positions closer to the flange that fits against the edge of the desk, I completely eliminated the wobble.

Playstation 2 Driving Force EX Racing Wheel Review

Playstation 2 Driving Force EX Racing Wheel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Although the wheel has quirks with both the PS2 & PS3, the wheel is still definitely worth its price! With a full day of trials & errors, I was surprised that the force feedback was equally inconsistent with the PS2 and PS3. Sometimes I started the game and the wheel worked fine with force feedback; sometimes the wheel worked but the force feedback didn't; sometimes the wheel only worked for multiplayer mode but with no force feedback; and sometimes the game didn't work at all - all this for the SAME game. As you can see, quite frustrating, but when it did work, it's was SOOO awesome that I decided to experiment all day with it. I did more testing with the PS3, so I'll focus on that. For the PS2, some games do state that you must plug the USB into the top port (for older systems - for newer PS2 systems, I don't know which is the preferred port). Similarly, the PS3 has a preferred port.

THE BEST CONFIGURATION FOR THE PS3 IS: 1. plug the USB into port #3 (port #1 also works, but I had more success with #3), 2. turn on the system manually - DO NOT use the PS3 controller to turn it on! This allows for the wheel to be assigned to controller #1 - MOST driving games can not be played in single-player mode when the wheel is assigned to controller #2. Unfortunately, the wheel does not have a PS button to re-assign the wheelor quit the game. If your system was on and a controller was previously assigned to #1, then the wheel usage will be inconsistent. Therefore, it's best to plug in the USB in port #3 and turn on the system manually. This way, I was able to reliably play games with the wheel with force feedback.

GAME COMPATIBILITY: Currently, I only have 8 driving games. The most reliably were Burnout 3: Takedown and Midnight Club 2 (I would assume later games in the series would also work, but not sure about earlier games). Gran Turismo 4 and Need for Speed 2 also worked fine, but it sometimes took several attempts to start the game. Like plugging new USB devices into a computer, sometimes the drivers load correctly, sometimes they don't, so try several times. These 4 games all worked with the wheel with force feedback.
MotoGP3 and Tourist Trophy worked with the wheel, but without force feedback AND it required Pelican's PS2 USB adapter ($15) to be plugged in also. Pelican's PS2 USB adapter is worth it though 'cause it was the only way I could adjust the sensitivity of the wheel. Once the sensitivity is adjusted, it should remain the same as long as the system is on (you can change games and have the same sensitivity). However, I am not sure if the wheel returns to default sensitivity once you turn off the system.
Dirt for PS3 worked wonderfully - great force feedback and a joy to drive! However, World Rally Championship was the MOST inconsistent (even though Logitech stated that it's compatible). Sometimes it worked with the wheel, and sometimes it didn't (actually, when I got this game to work, Gran Turismo didn't work).
You can see the full list of supported games (up to end of 2005, they haven't updated the list) on Logitech's website. The manual really sucks.

As for people deciding between this wheel (EX) and the Driving Force Pro, the main difference is that the Pro has 900 degrees turn for SOME supported games (see Logitech's site). While 200 degrees turn for the EX model is arcade-like driving, 900 degrees turn is kinda overkill. Some purists say that 900 is like simulating a race car, but you can only comfortably turn the wheel 270 degrees in each direction (try it for yourself and you'll see) - therefore, 540 degrees would have been more ideal. I think this is a practical observation since several reviewers indicated that it was hard to adapt to the Pro wheel. Besides, the blue rubber of the EX model looks cool and the stick shifter of the Pro model looks bulky (EX's paddle shifter works fine). The final difference between the 2 models (besides price), is the vibration/ resistance motor. The EX model weighs in at 9 lbs, while the Pro weighs in at 15 lbs - that 67% heavier because of it's stronger motor. You may get better vibrations with the Pro model, but many reviewers complained that it was noisy. I did not find that problem with the EX wheel.

I have used Netgear, Belkin and Linksys routers in the past and had no end of issues, the netgear one blew up and during its life required constant reboots, the wireless LAN on the Linksys kept turning itself off, an issue occuring on multiple units, and the Belkin router would not support my work's VPN.I bought a US Robotics router as back when i bought my first 14.4K modem it was reliable. This rounter lasted for about 2 years until i dropped it when moving house.I remember reading somewhere that 3Com had bought US Robotics so decided to go for this one. 2 years with it only requiring rebooting 3 times made me decide to get one once i moved to the US, 4 months and it still has not required a reboot. The firewall rules are easy to setup and use.

if you are looking for a router you can set up and never think about, get this one.

Playstation 2 Action Replay Max Evo Edition Review

Playstation 2 Action Replay Max Evo Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This product has received a lot of negative reviews due to its tendency to corrupt memory card data. Does it corrupt it? Yes, and no.

ARMAX is good for the very purpose it was originally created: cheating in games. All the extra junk they slapped on it, that's the problem. You see, the disc is loaded with cheats, and so long as you simply pick cheats for your game and then launch the game, you'll be fine.

The troubles begin when you try to use the much-advertised online updating feature (via either the Ethernet connection directly, or via the USB module that comes with the EVO edition) to get more codes. Most of the time, this is precisely what corrupts the existing data on your memory card. Either all of it, or some of it.

What happened to me was that I used ARMAX for over 6 months without any problems or corrupted data. I was playing titles like Final Fantasy X and X-2, which the disc already had lots of codes for, so updating wasn't needed. Then I purchased a newer game, and wanted to download updates for it via my Ethernet connection. Downloading was easy, and installing was automatic. Then I rebooted the ARMAX disc, and it started crashing at the point where it reads codes into memory.

I examined the memory card with the memory card manager in order to try and remove the new codes, so that perhaps ARMAX would at least work with the old ones. However, some data slots had been corrupted, and the memory manager could only remove some of the corrupted data, but not all.

However, not all of my dozens of saves were gone. In fact, it seemed as if only ARMAX-specific data (probably the new code lists) had been corrupted. I had some saves on the memory card that I had put serious hours into, and didn't want to start the games all over again, so I purchased a backup memory card, slid it into slot 2, and handpicked the non-corrupted data slots (the ones with the saves I wanted to keep) and used the copy feature to copy them to the backup card.

Then I formatted the slot 1 card and restarted ARMAX. It is working fine again, and both memory cards are fine. My memory card wasn't rendered unusable, nor were my dozens of saves.

I can always add codes by hand, which is a pain, but you have to think of it this way... This is a good product, when used solely for its bare bones purpose: to allow you to cheat in PS2 games. I can punch in the codes myself for the latest games, or just not cheat at all. In the end, complaining about the product's obvious design flaws doesn't accomplish anything.

Forget about the much-advertised extras, focus on its huge cheat collection, and don't buy the expensive EVO version with the USB module you won't want to use. As for me, I find that ARMAX was worth every cent.

2Wire 2701HG-B Wireless-G 802.11g ADSL Gateway Router
Average Reviews:

Having used the 1701HG (http://www.amazon.com/2Wire-1701HG-2WIRE-Broadband-Router/dp/B0029LRYMK/) previously, I found the interface basically tolerable, and as a modem it functions well enough with my AT&T account. It's built in a less annoying and cheap looking case. (though the 1700 series was pretty rigid for a dsl modem)

The Good:
- Easy Setup
- Compact Chassis
- Functions Fairly Reliably
- Has SPI firewall and wireless access

The Bad:
- As with most DSL modems currently, supports only Fast Ethernet (e100) ports, as opposed to the Gigabit and 10G stuff I'm waiting for
- Wireless is par at best

The Ugly:
- No QoS (this is a fairly important feature for gamers and such)
